We continue our discussion of wish omens today, and today I will debunk some of the myths that have been surrounding wishing in tunnels. I’ve covered wishing with bridges and wishing in tunnels it seems is very similar. But, like most wish omens that I unlock, you need to make your wish right, or you risk the chance of your wish not coming true. And who wants that? Nothing worse than finally getting a good wish opportunity and then messing it up because of a technicality. Actually, the universe doesn’t work that way. If you make a wish, and your intentions are pure and it is for your highest good, the universe will ALWAYS hear it. But it is important to honor the wish rituals when we get them, it is our way of saying thank you to the universe for this latest blessing. So let’s look at the blessing of wishing in tunnels. What wish myths do you know of with tunnels? Let me know if I have missed one!
The age old tale of wishing in tunnels functions around whether or not one should honk the horn while going in the tunnel, or holding your breath. We hold our breath when we cross a bridge, and the old wives tale of holding our breath while we enter a tunnel is something that many people practice. But what is the truth behind this myth?
Well, I did some digging and as it turns out, either honking or holding your breath in a tunnel is not an official “omen”. In The Dictionary of Omens and Superstitions, and in Cassel’s Dictionary of Superstitions it is not mentioned once. The history of making a wish when you enter a tunnel goes back to the days when tunnels were used in railway construction. Tunnel builders that were working would touch a piece of metal (in our day and age this would be likened to “honking”) before they entered the tunnel, and they would make a wish as they did so. Legend has it that this was done to ensure they would return out of the tunnel safely, and often the wish made was a wish to return safely.
What the Dictionary of Superstitions does tell us about tunnel wishing is that if you walk under a tunnel while a train is going over it, cross your fingers and make a wish as this is a sign of bad luck and the wish will negate your bad luck. As well, if you speak while you are in a tunnel or under a bridge, touch something that is green or you will also have bad luck. Lastly, the air inside tunnels is said to be healing, and specifically in the way of whooping cough. It was said that if you had whooping cough and went into a tunnel, that your disease would be cured. In fact this was so widely held that women would travel through a tunnel by train with their sick children, and hang their children’s little faces out of the train windows to become healed by the magical powers of the tunnel.
That’s it for today! Keep an eye on my Facebook and Pinterest page for more wish omens. And stay tuned for next week’s installment of wish omens, our last installment in the series, where I will unlock all of the myths surrounding wishing on a wishing well!
